Why do some relationships feel almost effortless while others consume so much energy? This article explores the difference between love, resonance and structural coherence — and what actually happens in the space between two people.

Why Some Relationships Take So Much Energy
You can choose each other. Whether you resonate is another matter.
Some relationships seem to move almost effortlessly. That does not mean there are no disagreements, irritations or difficult periods. It means that, even when tension appears, the relationship itself does not constantly need to be repaired. A conversation may be difficult, but afterwards there is usually more clarity. Differences remain differences, yet they do not continually threaten the connection.
Other relationships can contain just as much love and still consume an extraordinary amount of energy. The same discussions return. The same sensitivities are activated. Both people may genuinely want things to work and both may make considerable efforts, yet after a period of calm the underlying pattern reappears.
That raises a different question from the one we usually ask about relationships. Perhaps the most important question is not simply whether two people love one another.
Perhaps it is this:
Do both people become more coherent through the relationship, or do they spend most of their energy trying to keep the relationship itself coherent?
That distinction lies at the heart of what I mean by resonance within the Noöhedron.
Love and resonance are not the same thing
The word resonance is used very loosely. People say that an idea resonates with them, that two people share the same energy or that a place simply feels right. Within the Noöhedron, however, resonance is intended to mean something much more precise.
Resonance is not another word for attraction. Nor does it mean that two people are destined to be together. It describes the structural relationship between interacting field configurations.
When two people meet, their structures do not remain isolated. Their patterns begin to influence one another. Their natural movements may reinforce each other, compensate for one another or interfere with one another. Differences in direction, rhythm, tension, receptivity or coherence may combine constructively, but they may also create recurring counter-movements.
Imagine, for example, that one person responds to insecurity by seeking more contact. They want to talk, understand and restore closeness. The other responds to tension by withdrawing, creating distance and first determining their own position.
Neither response is necessarily wrong.
Yet together they can produce a self-reinforcing loop. The more one person seeks connection, the more pressure the other experiences. The more the second person withdraws, the more urgently the first tries to restore the bond.
There may be real love on both sides and still the interaction itself repeatedly generates tension.
That is why it becomes useful to look not only at the two individuals, but at what is created between them.
Intention is not the same as structure
We tend to understand relationships through intention. People say they are committed, that they are willing to work on themselves or that their love should be strong enough to overcome their differences.
Intention matters. Choice matters. Commitment matters.
But intention does not automatically determine the dynamics of an interaction.
In The Noöhedron, resonance is described as structural compatibility between field configurations. When two fields interact, their tension gradients may reinforce or oppose one another, their circulatory patterns may synchronise or collide and their coherence patterns may support or destabilise one another.
In the later Dutch book Het Noöhedron, I express this more simply: it is not intention alone that determines what happens between systems, but the actual structure of the interaction.
That distinction is important.
People can choose to remain together. They can choose to marry, separate, forgive, try again or invest years in a relationship. Those choices are real. What they cannot simply choose is what their two structures will produce when they interact.
A recurring structural tension does not disappear merely because both people agree that it should.
This is why two lines from my original English Treatise remain central to the way I think about relationships:
The field does not respond to beliefs, it follows structure.
Resonance is not chosen. It is fulfilled.
Resonance does not require similarity
Strong resonance does not mean that two people must resemble one another.
In fact, differences can be highly constructive when they fit together functionally. One person may naturally provide direction while the other safeguards coherence. One may structure quickly while the other leaves more room for what has not yet taken shape. One may bring movement while the other contributes stability.
The important question is not whether the two people are the same.
It is whether their differences can coexist without one person constantly having to suppress, correct or compensate for the other.
That is why similarity alone tells us very little. Two people may share many characteristics and still repeatedly trigger the same form of tension. Two very different people may form a remarkably coherent relationship because their differences support rather than obstruct one another.
The decisive question is therefore not:
How much do we have in common?
It is:
What happens to our differences when our structures become coupled?
Why some relationships consume so much energy
Every serious relationship requires attention. That is very different from continually compensating for the relationship itself.
A difficult conversation can require considerable energy and still increase coherence. There was tension, both people examined it and something became clearer afterwards. The relationship has changed because both people now understand more than they did before.
In another relationship, the same subject may be discussed twenty times. Each conversation creates temporary peace, yet a few weeks later virtually the same pattern returns.
At that point, the content of the argument may be less informative than the structure beneath it.
Why does the interaction keep returning both people to the same position?
This is where the distinction between development and maintenance becomes useful.
Some relationships require energy because they are developing.
Others require energy primarily because they must continually repair the same structural imbalance.
That is not the same thing.
A relationship can also remain stable for decades while requiring enormous compensation. Human beings are exceptionally good at adapting. We learn which subjects to avoid, how far we can go, when silence is safer and how to anticipate another person's reaction. Roles become fixed. Routines develop around vulnerable areas.
Such a relationship may appear stable from the outside.
But stability is not necessarily coherence.
A more revealing question may therefore be:
How much continuous correction is required to keep this relationship stable?
Ease is not the same as superficiality
The reverse misunderstanding also exists.
When a relationship feels easy, people sometimes distrust it. Surely meaningful love must be intense. Surely a serious relationship requires hard work.
Sometimes it does.
But perhaps we too easily confuse effort with depth.
A well-coordinated system loses less energy to internal resistance. That does not make it shallow. It simply leaves more energy available for development, creativity, intimacy and life beyond the relationship itself.
Perhaps that is one of the characteristics of strong resonance.
Not the absence of tension, but the absence of unnecessary structural resistance.
Resonance, dissonance and emergence
Within the Noöhedron, three broad outcomes can arise when structures interact.
In resonance, the interaction increases integration.
In dissonance, tension rises and systems may begin to move apart.
In emergence, something new appears that did not exist in either system separately before the interaction.
That third possibility is particularly important because a coherent relationship does not have to be permanently comfortable.
Two people may challenge one another deeply. A conversation may disturb an old certainty. A partner may reveal something that the other person has avoided for years. The experience may initially create more tension rather than less.
The question is what happens next.
If the tension eventually produces a new form of understanding, organisation or integration, the interaction has generated development.
If exactly the same tension merely restarts exactly the same loop, no new structure has emerged.
Conflict itself therefore tells us relatively little.
What matters is whether conflict can be processed into a more coherent form.
Can resonance be calculated?
If resonance is a structural relationship rather than merely a feeling, an obvious question follows.
Can that relationship be mapped?
Within the Noöhedral approach, this is precisely one of the purposes of a relational field profile.
First, an individual Noöhedral field profile is constructed for each person. The two structures can then be examined not merely side by side, but as a coupled relational field — the structure that emerges between them.
The point is not simply to look for similarities.
Some functions may be strongly present in both people. That may create direct structural recognition. Other functions may be distributed very differently. One person may bring a function strongly into the relationship while the other barely carries it.
Such differences may be highly complementary.
But complementarity is not yet resonance.
The real question is what the combination actually does.
Do the structures reinforce one another? Can tension be absorbed without one partner continually carrying the burden of restoring the relationship? Are missing functions compensated for constructively or does one person gradually become responsible for the coherence of the entire relational field? Do recurring differences lead to new integration or simply reproduce the same loops?
This produces a very different kind of relational analysis from a conventional compatibility test.
Instead of asking whether two personalities match, the Noöhedral approach asks questions such as:
Who naturally introduces direction into the field?
Who provides coherence?
Who can remain receptive when tension appears?
Where do two natural movements reinforce one another?
Where does one person's attempt to restore balance activate precisely the movement that increases tension in the other?
Which functions are strongly shared and which are almost entirely carried by only one person?
The aim is therefore not to calculate who belongs together.
Nor is it to reduce love to a formula.
The more interesting question is:
What happens to the shared field when these two structures become coupled?
At present, such a profile should be understood as a structural model rather than as a completed physical measurement of interpersonal resonance. The underlying Noöhedral theory describes resonance in terms of variables such as tension gradients, circulation and coherence. The Dutch book explicitly notes that these conditions are not yet a fully operational empirical law.
That distinction matters.
A relational profile can already map where two structures are expected to reinforce, complement or challenge one another. The stronger scientific step would be the independent measurement of whether coupling between two people actually increases or decreases coherence.
That is where the theory ultimately becomes testable.
Perhaps we ask the wrong question
In relationships we often ask whether someone still loves us, whether they are prepared to keep trying or whether both people want a future together.
Those are important questions.
But perhaps another question deserves equal attention:
What happens to us when we are together?
Do we become clearer or increasingly confused?
Can our differences exist without either person continually becoming smaller?
Does tension eventually lead to new coherence or do we repeatedly have to restore the same broken balance?
Does the relationship release energy for life, creativity and development or does it consume most of that energy simply to remain intact?
And ultimately:
Do we become more coherent together, or are we mainly using our energy to keep the space between us coherent?
The answer may sometimes tell us more than the question of how much love is present.
Love can be real. Intention can be sincere. A shared history can be profound.
But in the end, the interaction itself reveals what two people actually create together.
